Ecologists in Action celebrates World Wetlands Day on Sunday with an interpretive route in the Santomera reservoir (01/02/2019)

Ecologists in Action recalls the environmental and socioeconomic importance of wetlands, reflected in the environmental protection figures that protect them internationally, either within the framework of the Ramsar Convention, which promotes World Wetlands Day, Such is the case of the Mar Menor, or the Natura 2000 Network, such as the Ajauque Wetland and Rambla Salada, as well as other national protection figures.

Wetlands, moreover, are important both to study the evolution of climate change in our territory, and to help alleviate some of the effects of this global phenomenon.

The organization remembers that among the main effects of climate change, our region faces longer and longer periods of drought, as well as the increase of extreme weather events, such as torrential rains.

In both cases wetlands are important to cushion these effects, since they are a reservoir of water, and in turn help to laminar avenues.

Something that would be more effective if the threats looming over them were eliminated, in the form of overexploitation of aquifers, poor urban planning, agricultural transformation, etc.

In addition, these ecosystems contain a great biodiversity, both of flora and fauna, which must be conserved.

For this, it is important that the Management Plans of the Natura 2000 Network, which have been processed for too many years without being finally approved, be approved at once, and applied, although this delay will cost us public money in the form of sanctions of the European Commission.

The organization warns that the only impediment to approve these plans is the lack of will of a Regional Government too complacent with business demands, at the expense of public interest.

For all these reasons, Ecologists in Action will celebrate the World Wetlands Day with an interpretive route along the tail of the Santomera reservoir, belonging to the Wetland of Ajauque and Rambla Salada, which will highlight the importance of the conservation of these ecosystems, and the great variety of species present will be shown with a sighting and bird recognition activity.
