Volunteers from Murcia Acoge will give Spanish classes for immigrants (10/11/2016)

The City of Santomera and the voluntary association Murcia Acoge have signed this morning a collaboration agreement to promote the learning of the Spanish language among immigrants who reside in the municipality.

The agreement, which lasts for one year but can be extended indefinitely, does not reflect any economic consideration of any kind: the City Council, through the Department of Social Rights and Migration, only undertakes to provide the facilities and material necessary for the laying In advance of the planned classes, while the association will provide teachers.

According to the Councilor for Social Rights and Migration, Alicia Poza, "our goal is to defend equality of opportunity for all people."

With that same will, "we would like the road we have started thanks to these free Spanish classes will be expanded soon with other activities and services offered by Murcia Acoge and whose possible implementation is also contemplated in the agreement."

These include legal and employment counseling, translation services, employment training or support for document processing or the search for accommodation.

At the request of the City Council, the Adult Education Center of the Eastern Region, located in Santomera, has regained its Spanish language courses for foreigners.

However, "all the available places are occupied and with waiting list", notes Poza.

Because of this, "when the teachers of the educational centers expressed their difficulties in being able to communicate properly with the mothers, we decided to contact Murcia Acoge," he adds.

In principle, the courses will be directed only to women with school children who do not speak Spanish and, although the first students are Arabs, "the activity will be extended to migrants from other sources."

As expected, lessons will be given on Thursdays;

In the morning, from 10 to 12 hours, in the dependencies of Casa Grande;

In the afternoon, from 19 to 20:30 hours, in the Cedes.

Depending on the possibilities, it is not ruled out that this evening course also extends to men.

Four volunteers from the municipality and five others from other localities, collaborators from Murcia Acoge, will be in charge of directing the groups, separated according to their previous level of knowledge of the Spanish language.

Those interested in collaborating in this task can contact the Department of Social Rights and Migration.
