Santomera joins the memory of victims of the Holocaust (27/01/2017)

Today the International Day of Victims of the Holocaust is commemorated worldwide, coinciding with the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, on January 27, 1945. From the Town Hall of Santomera we want to join the memory of the victims Of this barbarism, especially remembering our neighbors who gave their life against fascism and in defense of democracy.

Antonio Giménez, Francisco Andújar, Jesús Valera, Manuel Serrano and José García were murdered in Mauthausen.

José Andújar and Miguel López managed to survive, but would drag the aftermath of the immense horror throughout his life.

On the other hand, Santomera City Council continues to join efforts to preserve our democratic memory.

Within this framework, a collaboration agreement has been signed with a local association El Taller de la Memoria to promote together with the football field of El Siscar an emotive project, a "memory forest" where each example will symbolically represent one of the Numerous people reprisal and murdered during the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship.

"The commitment to the democratic memory of our people is demonstrated by deeds and not just with words," said local sources, who recalled today the words of Elie Wiesel, a survivor of the extermination camps and Nobel Peace Prize winner ( 1986) recently deceased: "Indifference is the greatest of all crimes and the worst of sins."
